"“Reimagining Swedish Folk Art Into Indonesian Batik Style Drawing”

Description
"“Reimagining Swedish Folk Art Into Indonesian Batik Style Drawing”
Re-illustrating Swedish Folk Art into the Indonesian Batik drawing style.
Although Indonesian and Swedish textile arts have different histories, Swedish Folk Art has very distinctive and strong characteristics like the variety of Coastal Batik in Indonesia in illustrating the variety of flora and fauna.
As a form of exploration to marry the existing differences and expressions of the similarities found in the process, I tried to re-illustrate Swedish Folk Art into the Indonesian Coastal Batik drawing style.
Because of this marriage element, I raised the Sekar Jagad Batik pattern with a map of Sweden as the basis for the batik design, which represents the fusion of cultural differences and reinterprets the basic elements of Indonesian Batik such as Truntum, Ukelan, and Buketan with native Swedish flora and fauna that are often depicted in Swedish Folk Art.
I hope that with the batik that I make, new similarities can be found that strengthen the tradition of deep and long-lasting friendship between Indonesia and Sweden.

INSPIRATION
"Flora and fauna in textile art are a form of preserving identity, tradition, and local wisdom. I found a fascinating similarity between Swedish Folk Art and Indonesian Coastal Batik, where the richness of nature is presented intricately, colorfully, and emphasizes the element of natural form fundamentally in both arts. The techniques, symbolism, and culture surrounding textile art permeate the lives of the people of each country. Inspired by these similarities, I tried to re-illustrate Swedish Folk Art into the Indonesian Coastal Batik drawing style. The ever-evolving decorative variety of Coastal Batik is a reflection of the inclusivity of all levels of society and the fusion of various local and foreign cultures, such as Indonesia and Sweden. I re-illustrated Blåklocka into the form of Truntum, Bilberry and Lingonberry into the form of Ukelan, and arranged a Buketan of other native Swedish flora with Sweden's national fauna, the Eurasian Blackbird and Moose. As the background of the batik I made, I translated the map of Sweden into the Sekar Jagad pattern. The curves of the lines in this batik are likened to side-by-side archipelagos and display a variety of unique patterns. This pattern is like an arrangement of fabric patches (quilting/patchwork art) that is closely related to the local Swedish textile tradition. "

NOMINATE
This design express a sophisticated abstracted elegance with beautifully incorporated Swedish symbols. I love how the shape of Sweden has been weaved into the pattern of the design in a very subtle way. The symbols are also unique without being the obvious ones often chosen. The colours are well balanced with just the right amount of yellow to make the design elegant and vibrant. The crown of the moose is also a brilliant symbol of the Kingdom of Sweden. The bird is a beautiful symbol of freedom, and the Swedish flowers a symbol for the love and care of our nature.
The colours and the design give a calm, beautiful, reliable and trustworthy impression. Would work very well as a shirt.
It is a complex design very well executed with brilliance.
